Wave Energy
With oceans spanning over 2/3 of our planet’s surface, wave power is the largest untapped energy source in the world. The annual theoretical energy potential of waves off the coast of the United States is 2.64 trillion kWh, equivalent to 64% of the total utility-scale electricity generation in 2021.
Many current renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are highly intermittent, often relying on ideal weather conditions with large sections of land for infrastructure. Wave energy is much more robust, serving as a consistent and predictable power source, with wave outputs able to be accurately forecasted up to 48 hours in advance.
Wave power has the potential to play an important role in the future energy grid, allowing for an easier transition to a sustainable and renewable energy future.
